We are the Pistachio Nut Company. The foremost experts on pistachios in South Africa, and we are on a mission to establish South Africa as a global player in the pistachio industry with a reputation for premium pistachio nut.
The Pistachio Nut Company was established in 2019 as a joint venture between historic and present role-players within the South African Pistachio industry aiming to propagate and offer high-quality pistachio trees, provide guidance in variety and rootstock selection, assist in orchard establishment, offer production expertise, conduct trials to improve yield, and finally to introduce and trial new varieties for the local industry.
In 2021 we have established trial orchards in various locations to discover, evaluate and prove further potential production regions within SADC. In 2022 the first large-scale orchards were established, and by 2024 there will be over 200ha established, and by 2027 we project that South Africa will have at least a 1000ha of pistachios.
WHY PISTACHIOS?
PISTACHIOS IS A SOUGHT AFTER COMMODITY
Global demand for pistachios has grown 12.5% y/y for the last 5 years, with China leading growth at 74.75% y/y.
Due to unique growing requirements, only a few places in the world can produce pistachios commercially, consequently production is highly concentrated.
95% of global production comes from USA, Iran, Turkey and Syria, and all of these production areas are under pressure.
The global pistachio market is large, diversified, robust and mature.
Pistachios commands a high growers price and is among the most profitable nuts to produce.
PISTACHIOS IS A SUPERFOOD AND A COMPLETE PROTEIN
Global consumption is rapidly moving towards sustainable plant based nutrition.
Pistachio is one of handful plant-based complete proteins.
Pistachios being high in fibre, antioxidants, melatonin, potassium and low in calories is crowned a superfood.
SOUTH AFRRICA IS A PROVEN PISTACHIO PRODUCTION AREA
The hot summers, cold winters and moderate spring temperatures of the Karoo is well suited for the production of pistachios.
In Prieska pistachios have been managed to produce yields similar to those in California.
South Africa has the varieties, knowledge, experience to grow pistachios successfully.
